Winter at English's Farm

This is a scene that always speaks to me. I'm not sure I can explain what the connection is for me. I have shot it in summer, in autumn, in mist and in snow. It is one of the few remaining farms in my small town; the owners are descended from one of the first families to settle our area.

But beyond the history is just the scene itself -- rolling fields, meandering fence, arching trees. Objectively beautiful, yes; but it is so beautiful to me because it is a scene I grew up with, and it speaks to me of home.

What sort of landscape do you hold in your heart?

Being a bit of a country girl at heart I like similar views Mary. Unfortunately they are becoming less and less these days.

There is an enormous rolling field nearby I long to go out and shoot in but won't until it becomes conservation land which hopefully will happen soon!

Did you see the moon this morning?

Now I wish I'd woken up earlier after reading Sharon's comment about the moon. I slept in until nearly 8:30 and my husband had already shoveled a walkway around the entire house, cleared the car of snow and is now outside cross country skiing. I need coffee.

But to answer your question, rolling hills, trees, soft grasses, any sort of landscape speaks to me if I think it beautiful. I clicked on all the links here on this post and remember this scene well. It's poetic, isn't it?

that is beautiful. i know what you mean. i grew up near a farm it was beautiful. it no longer exists. i often think of how nice it was to be surrounded by pastures instead of all the homes. thanks for visiting!

Beautiful. Actually there used to be a field I call the alfalfa field at my great-grandparents little country residence that I always loved to stare at. The property is still in the family but is not lived on anymore. Love the place and my alfalfa field. They only grew alfalfa there when I was a little girl.

I loved seeing the farm in all the seasons like this...beautiful...

The landscapes that speak to me are also from childhood memories...gray beaches, stone walls, swampy woods...

Hi Mary

We have been out today in the Cotswolds and coming home we went along the Ridgeway http://www.nationaltrail.co.uk/ridgeway/
and although it is Winter the landscape was great, could see for miles!! Hope to have some photographs on my blogs later in the week. Jackie in UK

I'm a country girl at heart, too. I've never lived on a farm - but I so love the idea of it - working with the animals, seeing the gorgeous grass and trees and mountains and hills - in all kinds of weather. It brings me peace.

Well said, well said. It's so true that landscapes from our home area are the best regardless of the type. Any setting out in the country is best for me, be it in the mountains, rolling hills, farmland or our rivers and lakes. When I'm there, I'm at peace.

The view that speaks to me is the Carolina coast....without the high-rise condos that pollute it now...the Outer Banks is this way still....Beautiful photo, very mood look, smiles.

The snow is magic,
trillions of flakes
none the more beautiful
than any other___
rushing to earth
though floating softly
so as not to seem hurried
in its eargness
to cover our earth
and briefly hide the joy
held captive in my heart.

This is so similar to a scene near me, and it really is breath taking, all year round (although your photo is the most evocative form obviously!) it hits me of the history this scene portrays and one day will be resigned to! then were will i gallop all over?

Lovely. As far as landscapes go, I prefer beach scenes.
