I <3 Leaves

This photo is from my archives, taken last spring. We have a catalpa tree in our yard that my father planted when I was a little girl. Even when I was quite young, I remember being fascinated by the huge, heart-shaped leaves, and later in the year by the long seed pods that look, for all the world, like something out of Jack and the Beanstalk. The flowers are actually quite fragrant, too.

But the leaves are my favorites. :)

My husband studied dendrology during the brief time he attended college and I learned about a lot of trees along with him. The catalpa was one of my favorites for the same reason as yours! Plus it was quite unique.

I love the fragrance, myself! I have been known to stand under a catalpa tree in bloom and simply inhale!
One interesting note - despite the trees being weak, none of the ones around here took damage in the great Ice Storm of '98. Almost all the other trees lost limbs.

Our Catalpas seed pods are just turning brown now. There is only one gorgeous huge Golden Catalpa left across the street. There used to be 3. I am sure that the apartment dwellers have no idea what a great specimen they are.

It IS lovely and does look like a beanstalk fit for Jack.

There were a few of these trees in the neighborhood where I grew up and I remember that the across the street neighbor coveted the caterpillars that fed on them for fishing bait. Funny what little things that stick with you through the years.

Beautiful shot

I had a catalpa tree at my choldhood home, too. My dad had it cut down because it was too messy! But I remember the scent was heavenly.
